Child and Teen Counseling
Growing up comes with unique challenges, and professional support can be incredibly beneficial for children and teens navigating them. At Timber Creek Counseling, we help young people identify areas of stress or frustration, recognize their personal strengths, and develop practical coping skills to build long-term emotional and mental wellness. Because family support is critical to a young person's growth, parents and caregivers are an active part of our treatment process. Depending on your family's unique situation, therapy sessions may focus entirely on the individual child, the child and parents together, or even targeted skill-building sessions primarily for the parents.
What we help with:
Many families seek child or teen therapy when school challenges, behavioral shifts, or emotional distress begin impacting life at home. We provide evidence-based support for:
Emotional & Mood Support: Managing anxiety, persistent depression, mood disorders, stress, and navigating suicidal thoughts.
School & Academic Challenges: Academic hurdles related to learning issues, behavioral struggles in the classroom, school avoidance, and coping with bullying.
Neurodevelopmental & Behavioral Support: Navigating ADHD, high-functioning Autism (Autism Spectrum Disorder, Level 1), social skills development, and managing behavioral problems.
Family & Relationship Dynamics: Resolving family conflict, improving peer relationship issues, and supporting parents with tailored skill-building and parenting difficulties.
What to expect:
Successful youth therapy requires flexibility, safety, and a collaborative approach involving the key figures in a young person's life. Throughout the process, we partner closely with parents and, when beneficial, coordinate care with school teachers or medical providers. We break our child and adolescent counseling into three clear stages.
1. The Assessment Phase (Sessions 1–3)
Good treatment begins with an adaptable, thorough evaluation of your child's needs. During the first two to three sessions, we typically adjust our meetings to look at the whole picture—often meeting with parents or caregivers alone first, followed by a joint session, and spending individual time with the adolescent. In some cases, a family dynamic observation is completed. To ensure a comprehensive approach, both parents and children may complete brief questionnaires, and we frequently connect with your pediatrician, psychiatrist, or other school supporters with your permission.
2. The Treatment Phase (Approx. 20 Sessions)
Once a customized roadmap is created, active treatment begins. While a typical course of therapy lasts around 20 sessions, this timeline varies greatly based on your child's developmental age and goals. We understand the realities of balancing therapy with school schedules, sports, and summer activities, and we will collaborate with you to balance mental health goals with your busy lifestyle. We utilize proven, evidence-based youth modalities while prioritizing a safe, engaging environment where your child or teen feels comfortable opening up.
3. The Maintenance Phase
After your child or teen has achieved their primary goals, long-term stability is our focus. As children grow and enter new environments, it is common to check back in as they hit different developmental milestones. Many adolescents value having our practice as a safe, trusted space they can return to throughout middle school and high school transitions. While many families graduate fully from treatment, others choose to transition to preventative "booster" check-ins to protect their progress long-term.
