Perinatal Counseling

The journey to parenthood brings a beautiful yet complex wave of emotions, challenges, and immense lifestyle transformations. Whether you are navigating pregnancy or adjusting to the demanding realities of a newborn, it is completely normal to feel overwhelmed, anxious, or disconnected. Our specialized Perinatal and Postpartum Therapy services are designed to provide a warm, nonjudgmental, and compassionate environment for individuals and growing families across Michigan. Our advanced-trained maternal mental health specialists help you process your experiences, unpack heavy emotions, and develop practical coping mechanisms so you can move past survival mode and truly thrive during this transformative period.

What we help with:

Perinatal mental health challenges frequently extend far beyond the "baby blues". We provide advanced, evidence-based clinical support for a wide range of maternal and paternal challenges, including:

Pregnancy-Related Mood Changes: Managing severe prenatal anxiety, pregnancy-related depression, persistent worry, and overwhelming mood fluctuations.

Postpartum Mood & Anxiety Disorders (PMADs): Comprehensive care for postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, intrusive thoughts (perinatal OCD), and sudden mood swings.

Adjustment to Parenthood: Navigating complex shifts in individual identity, evolving relationship dynamics with your partner, and managing the weight of new parental responsibilities.

Birth Trauma & Reproductive Loss: Compassionate, specialized processing for traumatic birth experiences, fertility challenges, miscarriage, and perinatal grief.

What to expect:

Successful perinatal therapy honors the delicate timelines and physical realities of pregnancy and early parenthood. We build a highly personalized, flexible care plan that respects your physical recovery, infant scheduling demands, and personal goals. We guide you through three clear phases of support.

1. The Assessment Phase (Sessions 1–3)
Every individual's path to parenthood is deeply personal. During the first two to three sessions, we complete a thorough, gentle evaluation focused on understanding your current concerns, emotional baseline, and immediate support systems. We work together to explore what you are experiencing, establish meaningful goals, and determine if our maternal health specialists are the right fit for your needs. With your permission, we can easily coordinate care with your OB/GYN, midwife, or doula to ensure your medical and mental health teams are fully aligned.

2. The Treatment Phase (Approx. 20 Sessions)
Once your specific needs are mapped out, we transition into active, goal-oriented therapy. While a typical path of care averages around 20 sessions, your timeline is entirely adaptable based on your life variables. Several of our clinicians hold advanced Postpartum Support International (PSI) certifications, utilizing proven, research-backed modalities like CBT, ACT, and EMDR. Our main priority is maintaining an emotionally secure space where you feel completely safe to address vulnerable feelings without fear of judgment.

3. The Maintenance Phase
After you have successfully processed your challenges and reached a stable, healthy baseline, we protect your progress. Some parents graduate fully from care once their baseline goals are met, confident in their new toolkit. Others find it comforting to transition to less frequent "booster check-ins" timed around specific milestones—such as returning to work, stopping breastfeeding, or transitioning through developmental infant regressions—to keep their mental wellness on track.
