Couples Counseling

There is no shame in getting help with your relationship—in fact, evidence shows most couples wait too long to seek support. We guide partners through challenging issues while working to build a stronger foundation for the future. During our tailored, evidence-based sessions, we help you develop healthy communication skills, break unhelpful cycles, recognize your shared strengths, and rebuild intimacy. At Timber Creek Counseling, we create an emotionally safe, objective environment where our therapists team up on the side of your relationship as a whole, rather than taking individual sides.

Please note: Unlike our individual services, couples counseling at Timber Creek is not billable to health insurance.

What we help with:

Many couples seek relationship therapy when daily stress, conflict, or distance begin impacting their connection. We provide specialized, expert care for:

Communication & Trust: Poor communication, avoidance of deep problems, infidelity (physical or emotional), and navigating forgiveness.

Intimacy & Connection: Lack of affection, challenges surrounding sex, and the feeling of growing apart over time.

Family & Parenting: Constant parenting conflict, navigating co-parenting boundaries, and managing complex family of origin issues.

Daily Life Stressors: Disagreements over household finances, severe work/life imbalance, and major lifestyle transitions.

What to expect:

Successful relationship therapy requires a structured, deliberate roadmap. We break our couples counseling process down into three distinct phases so that you and your partner always know what to expect.

1. The Assessment Phase (Sessions 1–4)
Good treatment begins with a thorough evaluation. The first four sessions make up our comprehensive assessment phase, where your collective concerns are outlined, specific goals are established, and readiness for treatment is determined:

Session 1: The couple meets together with the therapist to discuss the relationship dynamic.

Sessions 2 & 3: Each partner has a private, individual one-on-one session with the therapist.

Session 4: The couple reunites for a joint feedback and alignment session to map out the treatment plan.

2. The Treatment Phase (Approx. 20 Sessions)
Following the initial assessment, active therapy begins. From this point forward, all sessions will be joint couples sessions, as mixing active individual and couples therapy is not a recommended clinical practice. The typical course of treatment lasts around 20 sessions, customized entirely to the specific dynamics, history, and goals of your relationship.

3. The Maintenance Phase
After successfully completing treatment and reaching your goals, long-term success requires protection. Many couples transition from weekly therapy to scheduling a preventative "booster" or check-in session every three to six months for continued accountability, support, and relapse prevention.
